May 24, 2006

Dear Friend of Marquette Catholic High School:

As parents of past, current, or future students, or as alumni or benefactors, we all share the common goal of having Marquette Catholic High School continue its now 120 year tradition of providing excellence in Catholic education.  In addition, we are looking to the future for the long term growth and development of Marquette Catholic for decades to come.  There are, however, many challenges that must be dealt with as we go about our mission of educating high school students in a faith based environment.  A void of information and facts has led to serious concerns in the Marquette Catholic community about enrollment, development, leadership, public relations, financial stability and viability, among many others.

In response to this situation, the Diocese of Gary enlisted the services of Catholic School Management (CSM), a full service, comprehensive consulting firm that supports Catholic education with research and direct consultative guidance.  Last fall, Richard Burke, President of CSM, and several of his staff members, spent time at Marquette Catholic reviewing administrative and operational procedures and policies, as well as talking to staff, parents, students and other constituents, to evaluate the school’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as the challenges and opportunities facing it.  CSM assured us that the business of education, and in particular Catholic education, has become more complex, and that the expectations of accrediting agencies, parents, students, extended families and the media are realities all schools must face, including Marquette Catholic.

CSM provided a report which identified various opportunities to enhance administrative and operational performance.  One of the recommendations was the establishment of a Board of Trustees, whose charge is to work in close collaboration with our new principal, John Albert, to “strategically plan and formulate policies that pertain to the general excellence of Catholic education at Marquette Catholic High School.”  The Board of Trustees was commissioned by Bishop Melczek at the Mass for Catholic Schools on February 2, 2006, and since that time has been meeting regularly, working diligently through the many organizational and administrative issues any new board would face.

The execution of the tasks identified by CSM and assigned to the Board of Trustees is going to require the input, effort and consensus of a sizable group of volunteers who are willing to share their time, talents and treasures, and are dedicated to improving the perception, image and financial health of Marquette Catholic High School for the decades ahead.  It is a transitional process, and will require your support.

An excellent method to demonstrate your support is to volunteer to become a member of one of the committees established by the Board of Trustees.  We invite you to review the list of the committees and their purposes, and identify one on which you would like to serve.  A Board member will follow up with a personal invitation, and will be ready to answer questions you may have concerning your participation.

We acknowledge that this has been a challenging time for our extraordinary school, and we thank you for your patience and support.  The Board of Trustees looks forward to working with our new Principal, John Albert, and with each of you in the work of the various committees, in building a bright future for Marquette Catholic High School for years to come.

Best regards,
The Marquette Catholic High School Board of Trustees
